My Gerbils
Astra Name: Astra
Born: December 6, 2003
Sex: Female
Colour: Black

Astra was bought from a petstore to be paired with a gerbil that had lost her mate. She currently resides with a neutered male named Rowan. Astra recently went through a horrific ordeal where all four of her front teeth fell out. Thankfully, her teeth grew back within 2 weeks and she is now just as perky as ever.

Rowan Name: Rowan
Born: October 1, 2003
Sex: Male (neutered)
Colour: Lilac

Rowan is Astra's mate and was found at a petstore. He was very sick for the first four weeks, first having diarrhea and then constipation. I never expected him to survive. Thankfully he recovered and now insists on chewing the wire mesh on his tank lid.

Aris Name: Aris
Born: November 1, 2002
Sex: Male (neutered)
Colour: Burmese

Aris was obtained from a breeder in Saskatoon. He and Indira had 6 beautiful litters before he was neutered. The surgery was a great success and they continue to live together in harmony.

Indira Name: Indira
Born: October 1, 2002
Sex: Female
Colour: Siamese

Indira was obtained from the same breeder as Aris. She was a wonderful mom to 6 litters and was very tolerant of the pictures I took of her and the pups. Now that she and Aris have been retired from breeding, she is even more inquisitive and playful.

Jasper Name: Jasper
Born: June 1, 2003
Sex: Male
Colour: Argente Golden

Jasper was bought from a petstore and now lives with his mate, Aspen. He is really hyper and likes to think that he is the dominant gerb. His eyesight is quite bad, and so I often see him standing on his hind legs, swaying back and forth. Jasper is the only gerbil of mine that loves his wheel and he also likes to be taken out in his ball once in awhile.

Aspen Name: Aspen
Born: October 7, 2003
Sex: Male
Colour: Siamese

Aspen is one of Aris and Indira's sons and is completely devoted to his mate, Jasper. Aspen loves chewing cardboard and trips outside of the tank. He is known for flinging himself from an object to your hand in hopes that you are holding food.

Logan Name: Logan
Born: November 29, 2003
Sex: Male
Colour: Siamese

Logan is also one of Aris and Indira's pups. He is incredibly tame but unfortunately can no longer have sunflower seeds because he is getting a bit rotund. Logan currently resides with Nova but is going to live at Crazy Critters Gerbil Clan in a few months.

Nova Name: Nova
Born: July 21, 2004
Sex: Male
Colour: Spotted Agouti

Nova is my newest gerbil. He is currently living with Logan and was obtained from Crazy Critters Gerbil Clan. Nova is a very shy gerbil but will occasionally take sunflower seeds from my hand.

Gerbils who have gone to new homes or have crossed the rainbow bridge:

Asha Name: Asha
Born: October 7, 2003
Sex: Female
Colour: Colourpoint Slate

Asha is the daughter of Aris and Indira, and was obtained from a breeder in Saskatoon. She currently lives with a pink-eyed white male named Thorne at Crazy Critters Gerbil Clan. So far they have produced light colourpoint agouti pups, and may also be able to produce siamese.

Juniper Name: Juniper
Born: October 1, 2001
Death: January 22, 2004
Sex: Female
Colour: Black

Juniper was my very first gerbil and she had a rough life. I got her from the Humane Society and she had obviously been alone for a long time. She wasn't tame at all and would bite me every chance she got. She eventually got a bit more friendly but never really became tame.

Juniper originally was paired with Jasper and they conceived one litter. The day of the birth she had contractions for hours without producing a pup and so I rushed her to the emergency vet. It turns out that Juniper was a lot older than I had previously thought and so had produced a litter of only one pup. The pup was so huge that it would not come out on its own. The veterinarian was able to remove the pup with massage, but it unfortunately was still born.

Juniper rebounded back after her trip to the vet. I had to split her from Jasper, because I didn't want her to have to go through that ordeal again. Juniper had also been overgrooming Jasper and had removed a circular patch of hair under his ear. She would hold him down to groom him as he would squeak in protest.

Juniper was then paired with Asha. They lived the first few months together peacefully but then Juniper began to chase Asha every time she came out of hiding. I split them into different tanks and hoped to reintroduce them when they had gotten a bit lonely.

Juniper and Asha were never reintroduced. A few days after they were split up, Juniper chewed her way through her tank lid. Her tank was on a ledge and she wound up falling to the floor and breaking her back. It was incredibly sad to see her in the morning, still alive, without the use of her back legs. I took her to the vet and had to have her euthanized. I cried for two days straight. Rest in Peace, Juniper.
